If you’re looking for something exciting to do this weekend, Howard’s has a suggestion. Friday night, bands slated to perform include The Heart of Juliet Jones, The Juniper Wait and Dash the Assassin. Doors open at 8 p.m., and there is a $5 cover.
Headlining the show is Tomassi, a hardcore band from Cleveland. They sound similar to popular favorites My Chemical Romance and As I Lay Dying. The band is made up of lead vocalist and guitar player Jon Chips, guitarist Eddie Guggenbiller, bassist Matt “Spike” Gruenwald and drummer Peter Hudy.
Dan Phillips, guitar player for The Heart of Juliet Jones describes his band’s sound as post-hardcore combined with screamo. Their high energy sound and emotional lyrics are reminiscent of bands like Thursday and From Autumn to Ashes. Phillips’ band mates include Rob Weber, lead vocals and guitar, bass player Tony Fussell and drummer Trevor Gilbert.
Dash the Assassin is an alternative rock band from Defiance, Ohio. Lead vocalist J. David Blanchard has a smooth voice similar to that of Radiohead’s Thom Yorke. Musically, they are comparable to newer alternative rock bands 30 Seconds to Mars, Muse, and Dredge. Guitar players Jason Demland and KC Spitnale, bass player Tommy Wanye and drummer Jordan Richer join Blanchard to make up Dash the Assassin. Their influences run across the rock gamut, including bands like The Foo Fighters, Audioslave and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Guitar players Cody Kirkendall and Matthew Bahnsen join drummer Kyle Kilmer and bass player Rob Zajac to form The Juniper Wait, the last band on the bill. They are an instrumental post rock band from Port Clinton, Ohio. Fans of bands like Tortoise, Sigur Ros, and Mogwai will probably dig their sound. They are more experimental than most bands that take the stage at Howard’s. Their song “Subletting My House” is beautifully melodic.
Tomassi, The Heart of Juliet Jones, Dash the Assassin, and The Juniper Wait all represent different genres of modern rock music. It will be an eclectic show, and should have something for everyone. Post rock fans will enjoy The Juniper Wait, while screamo kids should dig The Heart of Juliet Jones and Tomassi and modern rock lovers will like Dash the Assassin.
Alex Kish of Taking on Explosives, the promoter of the show, says this will be a “hardcore show featuring all unsigned younger bands with bright futures ahead of them.”
