Summer blockbuster season has officially arrived, and ‘Star Trek’ is indisputably leading the pack.
Here’s a movie that not only has the action, suspense and special effects you would come to expect from the blockbuster season, but the story line and cast to back it up. Chris Pine is absolutely glorious as the young, hardheaded yet comedic Kirk, and really takes the role as his own. Zachary Quinto, who portrays Spock in the film, is spot-on and couldn’t have been better casted. Eric Bana was also phenomenal as the insane and malevolent villain, Nero. The rest of the cast was also incredible, and they were just the thing to put this movie in motion.
But a large chunk of the film’s credit and success is easily awarded to the director, J.J. Abrams. Abrams (responsible for shows like ‘LOST’ and movies such as ‘Cloverfield’) gave ‘Star Trek’ not only the reboot the series needed, but the visionary substance and story it needed to take off. And with the help of scriptwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (‘Transformers’), the final frontier becomes a very real, very tremendous thing.
The only part of the movie that slightly bothered me was the time travel aspect the writers somehow dragged into the story. But we did get an amazing performance from Leonard Nimoy because of it, so no harm, no foul, right?
Regardless if you’re a trekkie or just a casual moviegoer, you’ll love ‘Star Trek’. It has everything you’re looking for this summer, and it goes great with a tub of popcorn.
