The Falcons men’s soccer team had their hopes of advancing to the Mid-American Conference tournament rained down on against the Western Michigan Broncos on Sunday morning. “Qualifying for the MAC tournament is extremely difficult and getting more so each year,” Falcons head coach Eric Nichols said. “Ultimately we shot ourselves in the foot too many times this season.” The team lost one to nil on a saturated field in Kalamazoo, Michigan. This ends a season that got off to such a promising start for the Falcons after they were six and zero only to finish with a record of seven, nine, and one. “We gave everything we had today,” Nichols said. “We have zero regrets.” At the 22 minute mark, the Falcons were awarded a free kick from the left side on the field by junior forward Tate Robertson. The shot met the head of junior defenseman Moe Mustafa who tried to send it home, for his shot to go barely over the bar. Sophomore forward Chris Brennan took a free kick at the 35 minute mark only for it to hit a wall of Western Michigan defenders. The game was tied zero to zero at halftime with neither team owning a clear advantage. Western Michigan came very close to un-tying the game at the 56 minute mark as a free-kick from center was headed into the bar. A rebound shot came from Western Michigan but it was stopped by Sophomore Goalie Anthony Mwembia made a save then cleared the ball for a corner. Fourteen minutes later, at the 70 minute mark, the Broncos took the lead as a low shot met with twine to form the goal. Two minutes later, junior forward Peter Pugliese was taking the ball down the left side before he was dragged down by a defender and thus earning a free kick which was ultimately cleared out by the Broncos. Up until the 89 minute mark, Bowling Green was throwing everything they could muster at the Broncos but couldn’t find the one goal to tie it up before the horn sounded to end the game. “I am hurting for our seniors because they have given so much to our program,” Nichols said. “I am sad for our seniors. They represented BG men’s soccer in the most upstanding way on and off the field, and I couldn’t be more proud.”
