Sometimes 90 minutes is not enough, and in the game on Saturday night between the Bowling Green Falcons and Akron Zips, some extra time was required to decide the winner as Akron won 2-1 in overtime.
“I’m extremely proud,” Falcons head coach Eric Nichols said. “Akron is one of the best teams in the country and very hard to score on. For us to regather our focus and get that goal back while playing down to players is telling of just how much character and drive this team has. Disappointed in the loss but extremely proud of how the boys competed.”
At the 12 minute mark, sophomore netminder Anthony Mwembia stopped a bicycle-kick attempt from Akron to keep the score knotted at zero.
The Falcons almost struck first at the 28 minute mark at junior forward Tate Robertson passed a free kick to sophomore forward Chris Brennan in the box. From twelve yards out, Brennan sent the ball just wide of the post.
Ten minutes later Akron had a great attempt that was foiled by Mwembia.
At the 53 minute mark of the second half, the team almost got on the board once again as senior defenseman and captain Alexis Souahy sent a header wide of the twine.
At the 78 minute mark Akron took a one to nothing lead with a laser inside the far post that Mwembia could not get to.
At the 88 minute mark tempers flared as both Brennan as well as senior defenseman Keaton Reynolds were sent off early with red cards.
“I think we had a good chance,” Nichols said. “It was an emotional game, we know that things are tough when you play at Akron and we let the emotions get the better of us in that moment.”
One minute later though, it was sophomore midfielder Charlie Maciejewski who tied the game at ones. Souahy was given the assist on the goal that went between the goaltenders wickets.
The game would be tied at one after two halves leading to overtime.
In overtime at the 91 minute mark, just 29 seconds in, Akron won the game as a one timer found the back of the net.
The loss sends the Falcons to 6-7-1 on the year and zero two and one in Mid-American Conference play. Akron now sits at two and one the conference.
“We were obviously clicking pretty well early in the season and found a lot of success but I honestly think that we are playing our best soccer right now. We have three regular season games left and are going to pour everything we have into them. And if things work out we will get into the MAC tournament, and then it is game on.”
The Falcons play next on Tuesday night at Cochrane Field against the Fort Wayne Mastodons.
