As winter rolls on, and Bowling Green athletics roll into February, the Falcons continue to put winning teams out. This is a weekly recap for the games in the last week of January.
Hockey | 16-4 (5-1 WCHA)
Coming off a sweep to Bemidji State on the road, the Falcons needed to at least split the series against the No. 18 ranked Michigan Tech Huskies to keep their chances alive at a WCHA championship. They did that and more, as they swept the two-game set, winning Friday by a score of 6-3 and Saturday by a score of 5-2. Connor Ford netted two goals and added an assist Friday night while Alec Barber also netted two goals and one assist on Saturday night. Both wins were convincing, and the Falcons continue to sit at No. 2 in the conference at 16-6 overall and 5-1 in WCHA play.
Next Up: Friday and Saturday at No. 6 Minnesota State
Men’s Basketball | 10-7 (6-5 MAC)
It has not been a good recent stretch for the Falcons to say the least. After starting at the top of the league, where most expected them to finish, they dropped a game to Kent State on the road Wednesday 96-91 and then got blown out against arch-rival and MAC leader Toledo 84-66. The reeling Falcons now sit at just 6-5 in the MAC and sixth place in the league.
Next Up: Wednesday at home vs. Western Michigan
Women’s Basketball | 13-3 (9-2 MAC)
What a year Robyn Fralick has gotten out of her lady Falcons, who now sit at 9-2 in the league, and are only not in first place because Kent State (4-0) has had a number of games cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. They trounced MAC bottom-dweller Western Michigan Wednesday 77-53 and then took down rival Toledo Saturday 76-59. Sophomore Elissa Brett led the Falcons with 17 points and chipped in with eight rebounds on Wednesday and also added 13 points against Toledo. The freshman trio of Lexi Fleming, Kenzie Lewis and Nyla Hampton continue to power the Falcons forward, and somehow after going just 3-15 in the MAC in 2019-20, the Falcons have a legitimate chance to win the league in 2020-21.
Next Up: Wednesday at Northern Illinois
Volleyball | 4-0
The Falcons remained unbeat on the year, and did it in a big-time way this week as they defeated Western Michigan 3-0 Thursday night and then 3-0 again on Friday night. The Falcons moved their record to 4-0. Katelyn Meyer was the show on Thursday, as she notched a game-high 19 kills while Hanna Laube had a whopping 37 assists, which was also a game-high. The Falcons won a slightly closer match on Friday, although they still won all three sets. Petra Indrova led the Falcons this time with 13 kills, while Meyer had 12. Hanna Laube again racked up a game-high in assists with 32. Meyer was also named the MAC East offensive player of the week for the second straight week.
Next Up: Thursday and Friday home vs. Miami (3-1)
