The Falcon women’s basketball team were unable to recover from a rough start Wednesday against the Western Michigan Broncos, losing by a score of 81-67.
“This is the third out of four games that we were plagued by a start that was not up to our standards,” Falcons head coach Jennifer Roos said. “We have got a couple kids that were sick… but I knew we would come out better in the second half and we have got to realize as a team that we need to do that from the beginning. We won the second half by almost 10, but it’s a little too late when that kicks in. Just like last game, even though we had more opportunities, or had the lead with under a minute to go against Miami, the two categories that just bit us again I would call our Achilles heels are points off turnovers and second chance points. It was 42-17 when you combine those two categories but with that said, I was proud of our bench contribution, we outscored them.”
The Falcons were lead offensively by an under the weather junior guard Carly Santoro, who had 16 points along with senior guard Haley Puk who put in 10.
“He didn’t pull his starters, he is playing that all the way until the end,” Roos said. “They had to do a couple things different defensively to stop our run but they had two kids that had double digit rebounds ones a post and one’s a freshman guard so it has nothing to do with our four guard lineup we have gone to for the second game in a row, its just being determined and being dedicated and just wanting it more than the other person. Proud of our effort in the second half but I knew it would be that way.”
Two major spark plugs for the Falcons in this one were freshman guard Kennedy Williams and sophomore guard Caterrion Thompson, both whom got big buckets to keep the game from getting out of hand.
“She (Kennedy Williams) had double digit minutes and I thought she did well she was starting to get pressured a little bit so I went back and forth with both (her and Lambert). To her credit she stepped up and made a lot of shots. She was one of the first ones I talked to afterwards. There’s still some things she can improve on but she was a really big spark for us.”
The Falcons play next on Saturday on the road at the Northern Illinois Huskies.
