Tonight, the University will be hosting a government, non-profit and volunteer job fair, in Olscamp 101 from 5:30-9:00 p.m.
Representatives from 41 organizations will be on hand to talk with students. The Career Center recommends that students bring multiple copies of their resumes to distribute to the representatives.
“This is an opportunity for students to see the variety of possibilities when working for government, non-profit and volunteer agencies,” Michelle Simmons, associate director of student employment, said.
Representatives will be offering full-time career positions, internships and volunteers to work for them. Many of the organizations are government agencies.
Some of the different organizations represented on campus include the American Cancer Society, Social Security Administration, Federal Bureau of Prisons, Peace Corps and the American Lung Association.
Representatives from the city of Akron, City Year Cleveland and City Year Columbus will be on hand. Also involved are representatives from Ohio Highway Patrol and Findlay Police Department.
The idea for the job fair began at the Career Center to draw different organizations that normally do not visit Bowling Green. “We thought of the idea to bring in more government and non-profit employers to campus,” Janis Slavik, assistant director at the Career Center, said. “Traditionally we don’t get too many of these organizations at the Job Expo in the fall.”
The Career Center is hopeful that the University will develop relationships with these organizations. Many of the companies that are involved have never been to the University before.
“We are always willing to try something new that is helpful to students and employers,” Simmons said.
Students of all majors are encouraged to attend. Many of the organizations are not looking for a specific major.
“This is a job fair for all majors,” Slavik said. “Representatives are not specifically seeking certain majors.”
