Tonight students will have a chance to vent about misguided relationships.
Kreisher Compton/Darrow is hosting an Ex-Factor Celebration. Students will be given the opportunity to bond with one another by participating in an open microphone session dedicated to anonymously complaining about past relationships and partners. Prizes will be awarded to the person or people with the best sob story/ies.
Following the venting session there will be a “Baby, they don’t treat you right” auction where dates will be auctioned to the highest bidder. An added benefit is that the bids are bursarable and the proceeds will be going to The Children’s Miracle Network via Dance Marathon.
The event was planned by Rachel Walsh, resident adviser in Darrow, and Kreisher Compton/Darrow’s Hall Director LaKeshia Dowlen.
“The idea originated from consoling various friends about their past relationships, particularly during their anniversary periods, those days when it would have been their two or three year anniversary had they maintained the relationship,” Walsh said.
“I thought that instead of being depressed by arbitrary calendar dates or glaring at annoyingly blissful new couples, we should have a night of cathartic bitching in which everyone could celebrate the dissolution of their relationships.”
Walsh said this is a much healthier and therapeutic alternative to “belligerent phone calls at 3 a.m. that end with ‘I hate you, you ruined my life, but what are you doing next weekend,’ or analyzing every detail of your relationship with your friends.”
“I would like for [students] to think of this as a reality based show, minus the television,” Dowlen said.
Walsh sees this experience to be very therapeutic and encourages all students to come because many of the dating ineptitude comes from the genre of individuals who are students currently.
“You can walk anywhere on campus and invariably hear people preface conversations with ‘I know he/she seems like a jerk but …’ Trust me, this campus needs this event,” Walsh said.
The “Ex-Factor Celebration” takes place in 202B of the Student Union from 9:30 p.m. to 12 a.m. and the entire student body is encouraged to participate.
“This night is really an emotional exorcism, to reduce the ex-factor,” Walsh said.
