With Sibs N Kids weekend starting tonight, there are a lot of activities planned for the younger crowd on campus that does not involve alcohol or other illegal activities.
This is a weekend where siblings of students can come up and cut loose, having fun at various events whether they be on or off campus.
On campus events for this weekend include a Casino Night and other activities at the Union, various outdoor programs at the student recreational center and a carnival, as well as other things spread over campus.
Casino Night in the Union Ballroom will kick off at 8 p.m. tonight with lots of games including: blackjack, roulette wheels, 2-over and under tables, and an electronic poker machine. Throughout the night students and siblings will be able to turn their chips in to win a wide range of prizes.
Some of the prizes that will be given away will be: CD players, a DVD player, a TV/VCR combo, game boy advances and many other items.
Heather Bishara, program coordinator for the Office of Campus Involvement, says that they look to have a good turnout. “Historically Casino Night has been successful,” Bishara said, “And it is now in the Union.”
All the games range for ages from 6 – 22, with something for everyone, Bishara said..
“We want everyone to have fun,” Bishara said. “But we are handing out information on gambling just to let kids know that it can be a serious thing.”
While this gambling is going on in the multipurpose room, kids are also able to participate in University Activities Organization’s Harry Potter Double Feature.
At 7 p.m. “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” will play in the Union theater.
The fun continues at 9 p.m. with “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.”
Today and tomorrow can be spent at the Student Recreational Center. Sibs N Kids get in free with a University student from 9 a.m – 11 p.m. and on Sunday from noon – 11 p.m.
Tomorrow the recreation Center will host a range of outdoor activities including events such as: A rock climbing wall for the older siblings, boldering for anyone, a coloring contest, and a few more various plannings.
Rob Thompson, a graduate assistant for the outdoor program at the recreational center, said that this is an opportunity for kids to come out and use their energy and just have some fun. Thompson said that the programs here are free and open to anyone.
Kids can climb a smaller portion of the wall without a harness, which is what boldering is Thompson explained.
“Later from 4 – 6 p.m., we will be letting people climb the rock wall with a harness on,” Thompson said. “And it’s free to climb.” This day is filled with various outdoor type activities. In addition, there is karaoke at the Falcon’s Nest in the Union from 8 -11:30 p.m.
Open skate will be held tonight and tomorrow at the ice area from 8 – 10 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 – 10:45 a.m. A special skate for Sibs N Kids tomorrow from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. Admission is $2 and skate rental is $1.
Everyone is welcome to attend any of the events this weekend and most all of them are free.
