The Falcons’ women’s golf team will head to Indian Springs, Ohio, this weekend to tackle Walden Ponds Golf Club and the best of the Mid-American Conference.
This will be the fourth year in a row that the MAC Championships will be held at the course, and this year the host will be the University of Toledo.
Nine teams will participate over the weekend in the 54-hole tournament. The three-round tournament will run today through Sunday.
Leading the way into the event for the Falcons is senior Shelley Binzel, who is breaking her own school record of 79.82 for the lowest strokes-per-round average in a year. Her current average of 78.35 for 20 rounds makes her the 10th- best golfer in the MAC currently. She is on pace to break the school record for lowest average by nearly two strokes.
Another golfer leading the way for the Falcons this weekend is junior Jenny Schnipke, who has also beaten the record for lowest average in a year with a mark of 78.80 for 20 rounds. Her current average puts her 11th in the MAC, and she is coming off three straight top-20 finishes.
Seniors Stephanie Elsea and Emily Hassen will also represent BG this weekend for the last time. Elsea is currently third on the team with an 83.95 average, and Hassen is fifth with an average of 85.71.
The last participating member will be freshman Amanda Schroeder, who is sixth on the team with an 86.58 average. Coach Kurt Thomas says he and his team have high expectations for themselves going into the weekend.
“It was a tough field we played against this past weekend in Columbus, and we feel that it gave us good preparation for the MAC Championships here,” said Thomas. “We are hoping to finish up near the top.”
