The new Spinning Class offered at the Student Recreation Center has been causing a buzz with the students this week. A free demo for the class started this past monday and is continuing through friday.
Spinning Class is a fitness class that takes place on a stationary bike. It is a total body workout in just forty-five minutes.
“The bikes are designed to mimic outdoor rideng,” said Jen Laheta, who is the graduate assistant of fitness at the University. The bikes have a resistance knob on them to simulate riding up steep hills. Stretching while on and off the bike is also an important part of the workout.
Music is played during the entire workout to help motivate the students. The instructors bring their own mix CDs to class, but students are allowed to bring their own music for the class if they wish.
All of the time slots for the class are full already, besides six spots on Sunday nights which are expected to be filled quickly. Students can still sign up for the second session that is being offered March 24 through May 2.
Stephanie Swander, a student who attended the free demo thought it was awesome and planned on signing up for the second session. Many of the students who attended the free demo couldn’t believe how good of a workout it was. “I have never felt that much cardio before while woking out,” said Kari Moravec.
Like Moravec, many of the students seemed very impressed with the new bikes. Everyone is told durring the free demo to bring two bottles of water with them if they join the class because they will need it.
According to Laheta they had seen the bikes being used at other schools and displayed at conferences that she attended. Laheta and others involved with the program were very excited that the bikes fit into the budget at the University.
The class costs $30 for students or members of the SRC, and $40 for non-members.
