While snow is stubbornly lingering here in Bowling Green, the BG women’s track team will get to open their season by enjoying some Southern weather for the weekend.
The team heads to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to compete in the Alabama Relays, which begin tomorrow morning and continue through Sunday.
After closing their indoor season with an eighth place finish at the Mid-American Conference Championships, the Falcons look to improve their winning ways and move up in the conference ranks at the end of the outdoor season.
The team will be traveling much more in the outdoor season than they did in the indoor season. Their schedule includes competitions in Tennessee, Iowa, Michigan, and Ohio. Though they will be on the road more, there are several new faces who will be helping the team in the outdoor season.
The Falcons will have their work cut out for them this weekend as they face several teams from Alabama, as well as other states around the country. Schools competing in the meet include Birmingham-Southern, Alabama State, Jackson State, Eastern Illinois, Ole Miss, and Middle Tennessee, among others.
MAC opponent Western Michigan will also be competing and will be an important team for the Falcons to beat.
The Falcon sprinters will be trying to continue their impressive performances of the indoor season, as will the middle distance and distance runners. The outdoor season will be interesting, with additional events, such as the steeplechase and the javelin throw, which were not a part of the indoor season. Also, the sprint races are slightly longer, with the shortest outdoor race at 100 meters, rather than 60 meters.
The outdoor season is full of challenges for a team that consistently posted records and personal best times in the indoor season. The team will strive to continue that standard of excellence as they begin competing outdoors.
NOTES: Bowling Green sprinter Alicia Taylor broke the MAC record for the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.38 at the Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend, Ind. over spring break. The previous MAC record was 8.43, shared by Kent State’s Aja Ferris and Central Michigan’s Andrea Baker.
Taylor’s mark was a provisional qualifier for the NCAA indoor track and field championships.
