A big sixth inning helped propel Bowling Green to an 11-7 win over the Wayne State Warriors yesterday at Warren Steller Field.
“I can’t say it was the prettiest win in the world, but it is a win and we’ll take it,” head coach Danny Schmitz said. “It was a positive getting to pitch some of our young pitchers that haven’t pitched since the spring trip today. It showed with them being a bit rusty at times, but they battled and did a good job for us.”
Matt Hundley pitched one and a third innings and picked up his second win of the year (2-0). He gave up only three runs and struck out four of the 10 batters he faced.
Andy Hudak was the big hitter for the Falcons going 3-5 with 3 RBIs on the afternoon.
The Falcons started right-hander Greg Becker and the Warriors countered with right-hander Kyle Hill. Becker came in and struck out lead off batter Garry Dufour in a quick 1-2-3 inning for the Warriors.
BG then took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom half of the inning. A high fly by Steve Raszka dropped in behind third that scored Dash Yost to make it 1-0. Then Josh Dietz hit a single to right center that scored Nolan Reimold and Raszka to make it 3-0 Falcons after one.
Wayne State cut into that lead in the second, as Joe Neal was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded that scored Tim Baywal. Right-hander Dan Barnes came in to pitch for the Warriors in the third and held the Falcons scoreless in the inning.
The Warriors would score two runs to tie the game in the fourth inning off new BG pitcher Adam Gumpf. Neal got his second RBI of the game as he walked with the bases loaded to make it 3-2. Then a hit by Patrick Kenny to short would bring in a run to tie it at 3-3.
