Jim Brown will drum the night away with local band Rooted Truth — senior night, that is.
This Tuesday, The Key yearbook staff is planning a senior night at the Black Swamp Pub. The event is free to all seniors that get their pictures taken for the yearbook.
“It’s a good celebration for everyone,” Brown said, a senior at the University. “It’s a good idea to have a celebration halfway through our senior year.”
It is a celebration that will hopefully entice seniors to get portraits said Dan Stypa, academic section editor for the yearbook. In addition to seeing Rooted Truth, senior night will have free food and a cash bar available to seniors.
So far, the event is going “very good” compared to three years ago, according to photographer Jim McAdams. While he has taken 200 portraits for this year’s Key, he said the turnout could be better.
“I don’t feel it’s helping,” McAdams said of the senior night promotion. The number of seniors getting their pictures taken is down this year from the previous two years.
Perhaps the promotion is underperforming because Rooted Truth is still working on getting its name out.
“We thought it would be a good experience to play in Bowling Green because it would be a good opportunity to play for the students,” Brown said.
In spreading the word about their funk rock sound, Rooted Truth played at local bars and restaurants in Toledo last summer.
“We have some songs on our website,” Brown said, adding that a CD will likely be released by the end of winter. The band’s website is at www.rootedtruth.com.
After senior night at the pub, Rooted Truth’s next appearance will be at Club Rain in Toledo on Nov. 19.
Brown urged seniors to come and support his band. “Get your picture in the yearbook and come out and celebrate,” he said.
