The Falcons brought out the brooms yet again.

The Bowling Green men’s hockey team swept the Bemidji State Beavers over the weekend and their third consecutive series sweep gave the team a winning record, 14-12-0 overall, good for first place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Asosciation.

This is also the first time Bowling Green won a weekend series against the Beavers since the 2016-17 season.

Here’s how the weekend went down.

GAME ONE

The Bowling Green men’s hockey team started their weekend series with a 4-2 win at the Slater Family Ice Arena Friday night as Fans packed the Slate on Jurassic Puck night, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the hit movie Jurassic Park.

The student section was filled with hundreds of Falcons fans sporting their new bucket hats, given to the first 1,500 fans upon entry and the spirited energy only grew as the Orange and Brown paved their way to a win.

Facing Bemidji’s staunch defense team, the Falcons came onto the ice ready for action. but the Beavers started scoring early with a wrist shot from the right boards.

A rocky start could have pushed BGSU into submission, but they were not looking to let it slide as the Orange and Brown played a great defensive period and left Bemidji unable to score for the rest of the period.

Bowling Green turned the battle around in the second. Falcon freshman Quinn Emerson was able to bring the Falcons back with an unassisted shorthanded goal prompting a noticeable change in pace. The teams continued to play heavily back and forth across the rink, both unable to keep possession for longer than a few seconds.

Falcon fans were drowning out the arena with their roars, able to feel the intensity on the ice.

Starting the third, another pace change was clocked as both teams seemed to get more comfortable with each other as they navigated their dynamics.

Bowling Green maintained possession of the puck, making many successful plays, and midway through, Falcon forward Jaden Grant scored another shorthanded goal, putting the Falcons up 2-1.

To Bowling Green’s surprise, the Beavers came back and made a power play goal, evening the score 2-2.

With the Falcon faithful on the edge of their collective seats, Falcon points leader Austen Swankler executed a great pass to forward who executed a perfect game-winning goal with less than five minutes to go.

However, the Falcons had more up their sleeve. The Beavers won a faceoff with only 11 seconds left in regulation but fifth-year Falcon Taylor Schneider ended the game with an empty-net goal, earning him his 99th career point.

Head Coach Ty Eigner expressed how the energy of the fans enhanced the atmosphere of the game.

“The crowd was awesome,” he said. “The players wanted to give the fans something to get excited about.”

GAME TWO

The Bowling Green men’s hockey team advanced their winning streak to six after a 5-2 win over the Beavers Saturday.

BG alternate captain Taylor Schneider reached a milestone of 100 career points, becoming one of 12 active players to do so.

Falcon captain Alex Barber also has over 100 career points, and he expressed how proud he was of his teammate.

“(Schneider) works so hard every day,” said Barber. “He deserves it so I’m happy for him.”

Coming off Friday night’s hard-fought victory, this game was looking to be just as tight.

After a scoreless first period, the Falcons got on the board early in the second as senior forward Chase Gresock found the net three minutes in.

The Falcons extended their lead 12:32 into the second frame with a powerplay goal scored by Schneider for his 100th point, assisted by Nathan Burke and Barber.

However, the Beavers were not ready to give up.

With four minutes to go in the frame, Beaver forward Mitchell Martan scored a power-play goal and brought it within one.

An energized Beavers team would come out in the third period and tie the game quickly.

4:55 into the period, Beavers forward Jackson Jutting snuck an unassisted goal past BG netminder Christian Stoever but less than two minutes later, the Falcons were back on top.

Six minutes into the third, Falcon defenseman Max Coyle put one past BSU goaltender Mattias Sholl, assisted by Barber and Schneider.

BGSU sealed the game in the last two minutes with a pair of empty net goals by juniors Ethan Scardina and Anton Malmstrom.

The Falcons look to keep the hot streak going next weekend as they go on the road to take on the St. Thomas Tommies in St. Paul for a Thursday-Friday series.
