BGSU Softball close out Evansville with tight loss
February 27, 2023
Coach Candace Fenton-Bockbrader and the Falcons lost in a heartbreaker to the University of Evansville Aces 10-9.
This was the final game of the 2023 UE Softball Invitational II.
The game started out hot for Bowling Green scoring two runs in the first inning.
Falcon freshman Delaney Davis was the first to score after junior Maycee Godbolt was walked with the bases loaded.
Then, utility Katie Hutter hit a sacrifice fly that scored junior Peyton Dolejs.
Bowling Green continued to keep the bats hot in the second inning.
Dolejs capitalized on a mistake and hit a three-run home run over the right field wall putting the Falcons up 5-0.
In the bottom of the second, the Aces put three runs on the board and got themselves back into the game.
The Falcons put runners in scoring position again in the fourth inning.
Hutter again capitalized on the opportunity, singling through the right side and scoring junior Sophie Weber.
However, Evansville showed some fight.
They answered back in the bottom of the fifth inning and scored two more runs, making it 6-5.
Hutter noticed that Bowling Green was only up by a slim margin, so she took it upon herself to help the squad.
She smacked a two-run home run for her first home run of the season and gave the Falcons an 8-5 lead.
The Aces scratched their way to score a run in the bottom of the sixth inning keeping the Falcons in striking range.
At the top of the seventh, Bowling Green got a much-needed insurance run by way of Weber, as she singled up the middle scoring sophomore Winnie Reid.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Aces caught fire and scored three runs to tie the game.
Infielder Marah Wood hit a single up the middle, scoring the winning run and winning the game for Evansville.
BGSU play in their fourth and final tournament before they head back north on Friday, March 3rd as they will complete in the Jane B. Moore Tournament in Auburn, Alabama.
