Week three is in the books as a big week four approaches for a lot of schools as four teams begin conference play this weekend.
BGSU took on the #2 team in the country, the Michigan Wolverines, and despite picking off quarterback J.J. McCarthy three times, the Falcons fell to the Wolverines 31-6.
Here is a look at the conference standings (courtesy of getsomemaction.com)
- Ohio makes a statement win with a big defensive game: Ohio hosted the Iowa State Cyclones out of thte Big 12 and escaped with a close victory. Both teams failed to score in the first half and it wasn’t until a Sam Wiglusz touchdown broke the ice in the third quarter. Later, Gianni Spetic put the Bobcats up 10 in the fourth quarter. Iowa State did give themselves a chance by lining up for a field goal to make it a one-possession game, but the refs called the field goal no good when it appeared the ball made it through both uprights, causing controversy in Athens. Iowa State did put up a touchdown late, but it was too late as Ohio defeated the Cyclones 10-7
- Miami breaks the long drought: Miami made the short drive down to Cincinnati to face off against the new Big 12 addition in the Cincinnati Bearcats for the coveted “Victory Bell.” Brett Gabbert had himself a day as he threw for 237 yards and three touchdowns, while also adding 75 yards on the ground. The game was 24-24 late with Cincinnati lining up for a game-winning field goal as time expired, but the Miami defense came up big and blocked the kick, sending the game to overtime. It was then that Gabbert found Joe Wilkins in the end zone in overtime to go up seven. The Miami defense again came up big in overtime with a Yaysyn Mckee game-sealing interception. It was the first time Miami beat Cincinnati since 2005.
- Buffalo remains the only winless MAC school: Buffalo came out of this weekend the only team without a win in the Mid-American Conference. They battled against the Liberty Flames, who play very well against MAC schools, and they did just that, defeating Buffalo 55-27. Buffalo also has losses to Fordham (40-37) and Wisconsin (38-17). The Bulls face off against the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns on Saturday under the lights at 7:30. The Bulls then begin MAC play the following week with a date against Akron
