Across Bowling Green’s campus, if you mention the name Terion Stewart, the first word that comes to a lot of minds would most likely be ‘football”, and of course it would be.
But those closer to Stewart know him as ‘The Bully’.
“I actually got that nickname in high school,” Stewart said. “There was a play, I think it was against Huron, and as soon as I got the ball somebody hit me, but I stuck him. And then, moved him out of the way, and then there were like three other people, and I’m just running to the touchdown. Then, my quarterback Javez Alexander, he just started calling me ‘The Bully’ after that. And then in high school they made a big article that said, ‘The Big Bad Bully.”
The senior running back from Sandusky High School is known for his punishing runs and explosive plays on the football field.
At the same time, he’s known for off the field is something you might not expect from Stewart, is the fact that he is a passionate lover of rap music.
In fact, Stewart uses the nickname ‘The Bully” as inspiration for his stage name for his rapping alter ego, ‘DaRealBully’.
“My sophomore year of high school, I don’t know why, but I was just humming something in the bathroom one time,” Stewart said. “I was like, ‘I don’t know why but I just want to rap,’ and then one of my friends, Ian, hooked me up to this thing called BandLab. I found out how to do the beats and stuff. So, I picked a beat from YouTube and plugged it in and just started going. I just say whatever’s on my mind, and then I started putting real things, what’s happening, and just worldwide stuff.”
Stewart uses his rapping to clear his mind and talk about real-world issues and draws influence from many of his favorite rappers such as Future, Rylo Rodriguez, and Jdot Breezy.
At Bowling Green’s home opener on Sept. 9, Stewart was surprised by the marketing department and the public address announcer following the first of his two touchdowns that day, his first touchdown in over a year.
“Everyone kept asking me, ‘Are you going to score?’, and I’m like, ‘Why is everyone asking me if I’m going to score?’ Stewart said. “I finally score, and I get back to the sideline, and then I heard my music and I was like, ‘Aw heck!’ And I heard the crowd screaming, and I was like, ‘What?!’. That was a good feeling.”
This season, Stewart has 215 yards and three touchdowns on just 32 attempts. He logged his third 100-yard rushing game on Homecoming, putting up 107 yards and a score on 12 carries.
There won’t be many opportunities to hear ‘The Bully’s’ music over the loudspeakers at Doyt Perry Stadium over the next few weeks, as the team starts a three-game road trip on Saturday, Sept. 30, down in Atlanta, Ga. for a battle with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
However, Stewart and the Falcons are back for family weekend on Oct. 21 for a matchup with the Akron Zips.
