There was a lot of unknowns coming into the season for BGSU Hockey, but one thing was known after tonight-
Team looked good.
Bowling Green took down the Robert Morris Colonials in Pittsburgh earlier this evening, 3-0.
The orange and brown registered five shots in the first minute of regulation, with the first goal of the season being tallied by Princeton transfer Spencer Kersten, with assists by Dalton Norris and Breck McKinley.
The Falcons continued the offensive dominance in the first period, tripling Robert Morris’s shots (24 to 8), and added a powerplay goal by Norris, who was assisted by Ryan O’Hara and Owen Ozar.
BG’s offense dominated the possession time and maintained near-complete control of the puck through the first 20 minutes.
Robert Morris caught their stride in the second period, winning early faceoffs and taking well-orchestrated shots.
The issue resided in the powerplays.
Sophomore forward Jaden Grant committed four minutes of penalty, Norris added five, and Eric Parker with an astounding 15 minutes of penalty for contact to the head.
Despite this plethora of shorthanded hockey for the Falcons, Robert Morris never scored, even when head coach Derek Schooley pulled the goalie for an extra skater in the final seconds of the period.
The third period was the longest period of the game. Robert Morris goalie Chad Veltri gloved the puck four shot attempts in a row and continued to stop the clock whenever possible to provide more time for the offense to win faceoffs and create shot attempts.
This effort proved promising as the Colonials finished the period leading in faceoffs, however maintaining the puck was not enough for them to light the lamp.
With 2:39 seconds left in the third period, Schooley pulled Veltri once more for an extra skater, resulting in an empty net and an unassisted goal from BGSU junior blueliner Ben Wozney.
For BG, goaltender Christian Stoever recording his first shutout of the year. Offensively, the Falcons were strong, specifically with Norris, who, despite the five-minute penalty in the second period, recorded a goal and assist with six shots on goal.
The Falcons look to improve to 2-0 after tomorrow’s game against Robert Morris at Slater Family Ice Arena. Join myself and Brandon Loe on 88.1 FM WBGU at 4:45 p.m., followed by puck drop at 5:07.
