The first game between Ferris State and Bowling Green was not a very exciting spectating experience.
However, the game was tightly played with skillful performances on both sides. The shot and shot-on-goal totals were within three, faceoffs 51% in favor of the Bulldogs, penalty minutes locked at six apiece, etc.
Most importantly, a 1-0 final score in favor of the Falcons.
The game’s difference existed in literally one play in the first period.
Just over ten minutes into the first period, Ethan Scardina scalded a wrist shot from behind the faceoff circle for his first goal of the year, the game-winning and the only goal of the night for either team. Only he, Gustav Stjernberg, and Ben Wozney added to their point totals.
“It felt good, saw it going in all the way, and it really felt good,” said Scardina reminiscing about his goal.
But Scardina wasn’t the only star of the game as goalie-work stole the show for the Falcons.
Cole Moore found the first shutout of his career in the form of a 37 save and three penalty-kill effort. Once again, the freshman passed the eye test, making saves that stunned both the crowd and the team.
With under 11 minutes to play in the game, two Falcons were sent to the penalty box prompting a five-on-three advantage for the Bulldogs. In a fit of goaltending excellence, Moore saved five shots even on some harsh angles and quickdraws by Ferris State.
“They just kind of throw pucks at the net and hope for rebounds,” said Moore when asked about his approach against Ferris State. “Keeping rebounds out of the game was a big portion of play and it was a good way of controlling the flow of the game.”
Scardina, Moore, and the rest of the Falcons attempt to complete their first sweep of the year Saturday night at 7:07 p.m. inside of Slater Family Ice Arena.
