U.S. President Barack Obama declared the month of February as National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month in 2011.
According to youth.gov, he called all Americans to “stand against dating violence when we see it,” as at that time, it was estimated one in ten teenagers would experience dating violence.
Dating Abuse is a public health crisis
According to the CDC’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey, one in 12 high school students have experienced physical or sexual dating violence.
Unhealthy, abusive, or violent relationships can have short-and long-term negative effects, ranging from behavioral to physical. According to the CDC, this can include depression, anxiety, suicide attempts, drug abuse, more.
It’s not just teens
Loveisrespect.org says 43% of U.S. female college students report experiencing violent or abusive dating behaviors.
According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, one in four women and one in nine men experience severe intimate partner physical violence.
