In come-from-behind fashion, Bowling Green hockey defeated St. Thomas for the first time this season last night.
Christian Stoever started in the net for BG, but played through less than 23 minutes, giving up three goals only saving eight shots. In a brilliant coaching decision, Ty Eigner pulled his veteran goalie in favor of freshman Cole Moore, who saw to it no pucks crossed his goal line while posting 32 saves.
“It’s a tough spot as a coach,” Eigner told media in the postgame. “We talked as a staff and we thought at that time it was something we had to do.”
The Falcon defense was, yet again, a high point allowing no goals for the latter 47 minutes of the game, stopping the Tommies 4/5 on powerplays, with an astounding 20 blocks.
Bowling Green still toiled with the penalty box, drawing 32 minutes of a penalty off of four minor penalties, and two game misconducts. The disparity occurred between the teams, with only one minor penalty and a game misconduct by St. Thomas, 18 minutes less than their opponents. BG was successful in their lone-man advantage.
The two straight goals to finish the second period set BG with a 3-3 tie and one point in the CCHA standings. With no goals in the third period or first overtime, the arena headed to a shootout, in which Falcon Ben Doran finished the game in the last attempt for an additional point in the conference.
“Part of shootouts is ‘are you confident enough to do it’,” Eigner said. “Ethan Scardina said ‘Put Ben (Doran) out there,’ and it was good to see Ben do that, and were really happy for him.”
