The Bowling Green Falcons took on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and lost both games of a mid-week doubleheader, 4-0 and 10-9 respectively.
GAME ONE
The Irish started the game scoring in the bottom of the first inning after Emily Tran singled up the middle to score a runner from third and take a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Fighting Irish scored two more runs to grow their lead. Rachel Allen hit a ground ball but an error on the throw allowed the runner to score the first run of the inning. The second run of the inning came from a Carlli Kross single to score the second run of the inning for Notre Dame and claim a 3-0 lead. Both runs that crossed the plate were unearned.
The game was kept close thanks to the pitching and defense of the Falcons. Emma Denison started the game and pitched the first four innings while Taylor Turner pitched the fifth and sixth.
Notre Dame scored one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning after Kloss hit an RBI double to score the Fighting Irish’s final run of the game and take a 4-0 lead over Bowling Green.
The Falcons lone hit of the game came in the seventh inning after Reagan Williamson singled to center field but it wasn’t enough as the Fighting Irish secured the 4-0 win in game one.
GAME TWO
The Fighting Irish took game two of the doubleheader by winning the game in extras taking a 10-9 win over the Falcons in eight innings.
From a pitchers duel to a slug fest, the Falcons took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Hannah Hunt singled up the middle to score two Falcons and give the Falcons the lead.
In the bottom of the first inning, the Fighting Irish answered back by scoring a run of their own after a ground ball from Karina Gaskins scored a runner third to make it 2-1.
The Fighting Irish kept fighting in the bottom of the third inning. With the bases loaded, Kloss singled up the middle for the first run of the inning. Then, a ground ball hit by Tran allowed another runner to score and give the Irish a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Fighting Irish tried to put the Falcons away early by scoring five runs and taking an 8-2 lead. In the inning, Notre Dame kept stringing together hits, and putting the pressure on the Bowling Green defense, capping off the five run inning with a 2-RBI single.
After the big inning from Notre Dame, the Falcons had to respond to keep themselves in the game. The Falcons would go on to score seven runs in the top of the fourth inning to grab a one run lead.
With the bases loaded, the Falcons went on a huge two-out rally. Cameron Kaufman singled up the middle to score the first two runs of the rally. The next batter Ashely Chevalier singled to left to score Kaylee Cole. Peyton Dolejs then hit a hard ground ball that went under the shortstop of Notre Dame’s glove to score Chevalier and Kaufman.
After five runs crossed already for the Falcons, Addie Martin singled off the pitcher Doeljs and Hunt to give the Falcons a 9-8 lead and cap off a seven run inning.
The Falcons would hold that lead until the bottom of the seventh inning. With nobody on and nobody out, Rachel Allen hit a solo homerun to tie the game at 9-9 taking the game to extras.
ND was unable to score in the eighth inning and in the bottom half, it would be Allen again to single off the wall and score the game winning run from third and give the fighting Irish a 10-9 victory.
This was the final pre-season game for the Falcons as the open Mid-American Conference play on Friday, March 15th, against the Buffalo Bulls.
