Bowling Green baseball (5-8) had their three-game win streak crushed against the Dayton Flyers (10-7) on Wednesday, falling 14-4 on the road.
Constant scoring by Dayton kept the game out of reach for a majority of the contest sparked by a homerun from freshman catcher Ryan MacDougall, who hit a grand slam that put four runs on the board early for the Flyers, one of his two homeruns on the day.
The lead stretched to 12 at the top of the sixth, just one inning before a mercy rule could be applied. Senior outfielder Jack Krause attempted to keep hopes alive with a single down the infield line, allowing a Falcon to cross base and keeping the game alive. A Flyer error provided a boost to a lowly BGSU offense, bringing home two more runs.
Pitching for BGSU continued to struggle as six different Falcons pitched for an inning or more. Krause provided a bright spot on the mound in the first and second, striking out a batter right after the first MacDougall homerun in the first, taking the game to the second. In the bottom of the second, he struck out one more Flyer out and forced two more to swing in a row.
Despite the win, Dayton struggled in two major categories- one being fielding, having one more error than BGSU, causing a lower fielding percentage, which ended at .947 compared to the Falcons .969. The Flyers also had 10 men stranded on base which was double the orange and brown’s five.
Above home plate BGSU went 0-3 with the bases loaded and earned a .167 hitting percentage which was much lower than Dayton’s .382.
April 23 offers a chance for BG to get revenge on the Flyers at Steller Field, but for now, the Falcons will look towards a weekend series against the Ball State Cardinals2, who are 11-6 on the year but just 1-2 in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). First pitch is at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 15 in Muncie, Indiana.
