In the last quarterfinal matchup of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) tournament, Ohio dominated Western Michigan, defeating the Broncos 82-55 en route to the semifinals of the tournament.
Here’s how it went down.
The game started with Aj Clayton getting to the rim and converting a tough layup for the first points of the night for Ohio, up 2-0.
Minutes later, Miles Brown hit two free throws to put the score at 4-0. Heading into the first timeout of the half, Western Michigan hadn’t scored in four minutes and 24 seconds of play.
Finally, after being scoreless for six minutes and 35 seconds, Seth Hubbard converted a field goal for the Broncos.
As Western Michigan began to string together more points, Ohio jumped to a 10-point lead after a Brown layup, forcing a Western Michigan timeout.
Coming out of the timeout, Brown, drove to the rim, going up and under for a two and getting the chance for one more and converting the extra free throw.
As Ohio’s momentum grew and grew, the Bobcats back-to-back three-point balls by Ike Cornish and Shereef Mithcell gave Ohio another double-digit lead with less than a minute remaining in the first half, up 34-22.
Ohio was in firm command of their opposition, up 35-22 heading into halftime.
Western Michigan shot 6/25 in the first half and turned the ball over nine times.
Brown hit the first points of the second half with a corner three two minutes into the second half for another Ohio score.
Six minutes into the second half, Aiden Hadaway picked the pocket of an opposing Western Michigan player and took the loose ball to the rim for a reverse dunk, bringing the Ohio faithful to their feet.
Ohio never slowed down, keeping up their pace of play for the entire second half, dominating the rest of the second half on their way to the semifinals.
Mitchell led the Bobcats in the victory, scoring a team-high 15 points on 7-12 shooting.
As a team, the Bobcats scored 42 points in the paint and shot 41.3% from the field.
Ohio moves to the semifinals of the MAC Tournament, facing the Akron Zips on Friday, at 7:30 p.m.
