Earlier today, Bowling Green gymnastics finished their regular season seventh in the Mid-American Conference out of seven teams. With a final team score of 193.625, Bowling Green ends the regular season with a 4-14 record, the same as last year.
To open the final meet of the year, Bowling Green scored a team total of 48.975 on the floor, their best event of the day, led by junior Kathryn Weilbacher.
Weilbacher led BGSU by sharing the MAC Championship on floor with a 9.900. It is the second year in a row that a Falcon won an individual championship as Taylor Jensen won beam in 2023. Weilbacher is the first Falcon to win a MAC Championship on floor since Kayla Rose in 2017 with a 9.950.
Other competitors in the event included senior Lauren Bannister, who logged the final floor score of her college career with a 9.775. The other floor veteran, senior Megan Decious also logged the last floor routine of her career with a 9.700.
Next, the Falcons took to the vault for their final runs of the year. Predictably, Weilbacher led the way with a 9.875, placing 10th in the event overall. With a total team score of 48.850, Bowling Green tied their vault score with Eastern Michigan, who placed sixth overall.
Moving to the bars, the Falcons scored 48.850 points as a team, outscoring Western Michigan and Northern Illinois. Sophomore Isabella Rivelli led the way with a 9.900, taking third place in the event overall. With this performance, she has now logged seven bar scores of 9.800 or higher this season.
Nearing the end of the meet, Bowling Green finished on the beam. While this was the weakest link in the Falcons’ scores, there were still some strong performances from sophomores Elise Brzoska and Megan Bingham, scoring 9.800 and 9.850 respectively. With a team score of only 46.950, this event truly made the difference between 6th and 7th place.
As for the all-around, Bowling Green put Weilbacher and Love Akpan in the running, due to their strong performances all year. Weilbacher earned a 38.650 and placed sixth overall, while Akpan scored a 38.225 and placed ninth.
With all final scores in, the clear winner was Western Michigan with 196.525 points. The Broncos, while only taking fourth place last season, earned gold this season for the first time since 2013.
Bowling Green concluded the season with a 0-6 conference record and a 4-14 overall record. From here, the Falcons wait for the team and individual bids for NCAA Regionals to be announced on Monday, March 25. Regionals will take place the week of April 3-7 and those who advance will compete for the championships the week of April 18.
