BGSU baseball (29-18, 21-6 MAC) captured a series win against Eastern Michigan (14-33, 9-17 MAC) on Sunday in what could be called the biggest win of the year as the Falcon earned the title of outright regular season champions of the Mid-American Conference (MAC).
The win marks the first time since 2009 that the Orange and Brown have been crowned regular season champs and BGSU’s seventh series win in the MAC so far this year.
A win did not come easy for the Falcons who found themselves down 5-1 at the start of the second inning with reliable junior starting pitcher Nic Good being pulled 0.2 innings into the contest after allowing six hits for five runs in the first inning.
Pitching for the Orange and Brown found its stride once it reached the bullpen with just one fourth-inning run tacked on by the Eagles for the rest of the game.
The fourth inning was also a kickstart for the Falcon offense with junior center fielder Nathan Archer mashing a two-run home run that would be the first of three for BG’s offense.
In the sixth inning freshman catcher Garrett Wright would make things a home run party, smoking a center field shot that would score two more runs. The final Falcon to join the home run club was senior infielder David Silva whose lone homer was the last score of the contest.
BG baseball started the season with a chip on their shoulders, being picked to finish 8th in a MAC preseason poll, they now become the ninth team in school history to be crowned regular season champions.
The Falcons will end their regular season with a rivalry series against the Toledo Rockets with the series starting on Thursday, May 16th at Steller Field in Bowling Green. BGSU won their first game against Toledo in a non-conference game on April 30th (17-9).
