Toledo is among the country’s most unhealthy cities according to an annual study by WalletHub.
WalletHub states its study “compared more than 180 of the most populated U.S. cities across 41 key indicators of good health. Our data set ranges from the cost of a medical visit to fruit and vegetable consumption to the share of physically active adults.”
Toledo ranked 164 out of the 180 cities, placing it in the bottom 10 percent, just below Baton Rouge, La. and just ahead of La Cruces, NM. San Francisco topped the list while Brownsville, Texas landed at the bottom. Overall, here is how other nearby cities ranked:
- Detroit – 171
- Cleveland – 126
- Akron – 132
- Cincinnati – 39
- Columbus – 110
Here’s how Toledo ranked in key areas of the study:
- Healthcare – 171 out of 180
- Food – 163 out of 180
- Fitness – 161 out of 180
- Green space – 103 out of 180
Here’s how Toledo ranked in other WalletHub studies:
- Most obese cities – 33 out of 100 (between Akron and Detroit)
- Most stressed cities – Toledo is one of three Ohio cities in the top 20 with Cleveland actually topping the list, and Akron and Toledo coming in at 15 and 16, respectively
Maybe not surprisingly, Ohio ranked 37th in WalletHub’s study of the happiest states. Idaho topped that list with West Virginia at the bottom.
It’s not all bad news for Toledo. U.S. News & World Report ranks Toledo the second best place to live in Ohio, ahead of Cincinnati, Dayton, Youngstown, and Cleveland. The website states, “Though tourists might not flock to Toledo as they do to some nearby metropolitan areas, residents know what makes the area great, including a low cost of living and a wealth of outdoor activities.”
