When active duty and veteran students return to campus, the university provides a ‘battle plan’ for them to conquer their college plans.
BGSU was ranked first in the Midwest for veterans and active duty by the Military Times in 2023.
There are many resources that are provided to members of the military at BGSU. Veteran support services are a constant and helpful resource to incoming and current students who are veterans or active duty.
Nontraditional and Military Student Services (NTMSS) is a great source for military students at BGSU. They are available to help with many issues regarding students in the military.
NTMSS is a helping hand throughout the admissions process, and they will help with making sure students receive and submit all of their transcripts.
NTMSS will also help military members turn their prior life experience into college credit and help with finding the right major and career path.
Members who are currently in the military can often get called into action at any time. There are resources and procedures in place at BGSU to help students and veterans, and ensure they stay on a steady path.
When call-up procedures are needed the student must first submit the military order papers to the Office of Registration and Records. If the student has to leave immediately, they can have someone continue the procedures on their behalf.
Military students are also permitted to complete their course work early depending on the timing, so that they can complete their semester.
If the timing of the report requirement for the student occurs on the first day of the final exam week, the student has a few options regarding their plan for completing their classes.
They are able to complete their work before they leave, or they can complete it at a later date.
BGSU also accepts veteran GI bills, which pay for veteran schooling.
The GI bill can also be used for the schooling of veterans’ children or other dependents, so BGSU can not only aid members of the military, but their families too.
BGSU also wants to make it easy for students to attend the university, so they are constantly available to assist with military students transferring to BGSU.
Class schedules are not the only issue facing military students. NTMSS can also help current students discover and utilize campus resources and develop programs to best meet their needs.
BGSU also has a university chapter of Student Veterans of America (SVA) which keeps veteran and active duty students connected with other military students both on campus and off. SVA is supported by NTMSS and Peer Advisors for Veteran Education (PAVE).
