BGSU women’s soccer (5-3-1, 2-1 MAC) snapped a 4-game undefeated streak Thursday night, falling 3-0 against Ohio University (6-1-3, 1-0-2 MAC).
Field conditions would be a big factor for both teams coming into the action at Cochrane Stadium, with storms from the past week causing slippery and potentially hazardous conditions, something that head coach Chris Fox took note of.
“It’s certainly affecting how we want to play, but it’s the same for both teams,” said Fox. “It’s loose, it’s patchy, it’s been unfortunate.”
Outside of a few small instances, the first 45’ would turn out to be unremarkable for the Falcons, with a majority of the 6 shots they took coming from a long distance out from the net.
With all signs pointing towards a tie ballgame going into the half, sophomore forward Sydney Crowe would find a way to put it in the back of the net off an assist from freshman midfielder Iro Fakinou and give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead with only 22 seconds remaining in the half.
Falcons redshirt junior goalkeeper Madi Vukas made a fantastic save up high near the right side post off the initial shot from Fakino, but the rebounder Crowe pounced on the rebound to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Ohio would not wait long to strike again coming out of the half, with sophomore forward Anna Burchett using her speed to take advantage of the spread-out field and scoring off the outlet pass from sophomore midfielder Jaimason Brooker at the 48-minute mark.
With a now 2-0 lead, the Bobcats were able to better control the pace of the game, forcing the Falcons to push the point of attack and try to make something happen.
Despite the lack of goal production, BG seemed to have a much better offensive game plan for the second half. The Orange and Brown made good work of attacking the third and getting the ball in the box.
In the second half, the Falcons had five corner kicks, with all of them being unsuccessful in finding the back of the net.
Another goal would come for the Bobcats late as junior defender Rayann Pruss would ice this game away at the 82-minute mark off an assist from junior forward Maia Kaufman, giving OU a 3-0 lead and eventually the win.
Next up, the Falcons will look to get a bounce-back win on the road as they face off against MAC opponent Miami (OH) (5-2-3, 1-1-1 MAC). The match will take place at Bobby Kramig Field in Oxford, Ohio, with kickoff starting at 1:00 p.m.
