Chicago, Illinois – BGSU men’s soccer (8-2-1, 3-1-0) battled with UIC (6-4-0, 2-1-0) in an intense 1-2 loss at Flames Field Saturday night.
The night’s first shot was taken by Bowling Green senior midfielder Alberto Anaya, which Flames goalie Kevin Dabrowski saved.
UIC forward Bart Muns strikes first with a goal assisted by Flames midfielder Marko Martsinkovsky in the 13th minute to take a 1-0 lead over the Orange and Brown.
Bowling Green fell short of matching the score in the first half while outshooting the Flames six to five, with junior forward Trace Terry attempting two shots.
The first half also included small flare-ups resulting in yellow cards for both teams by Mads Christensen for the Falcons and Martsinkovsky for UIC.
The Flames came out hot in the second half, taking twelve shots in the first 25 minutes, connecting on one in the 70th minute by Bart Muns, making it his second goal of the night.
Just minutes later, sophomore forward Bennett Painter was taken down in the box, earning a penalty kick for BG. Terry stepped up to the spot and answered for the Orange and Brown in the 73rd minute, scoring to cut the lead in half, 2-1.
After Terry’s score, tempers flared, resulting in yellow cards for two UIC players, which contributed to the six total on the half.
BGSU would not get another attempt to even the score as they dropped their first game in the MVC, moving to 3-1 in the conference.
UIC ended with an absurd total of 25 shots compared to Bowling Green’s nine, with two shots saved for UIC and ten saved for BGSU, tying Falcons fifth-year goalkeeper Brendan Graves’ career high.
The intensity of the game can be shown in the multitude of fouls handed out to both teams, with 13 for UIC and 11 for BGSU. Both teams finished with four yellow cards each as well.
Terry now has 10 goals and one assist on the year which is tied for first in the nation. His tenth goal makes him the first double-digit goal scorer for the Falcons in a decade since Pat Flynn in 2014, who scored 14 goals during the season.
Despite the loss, the Orange and Brown still sit atop the MVC with nine points.
Up next for the Falcons is a match against Detriot Mercy on Tuesday, Oct. 8. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. at Cochrane Stadium.
