It is a successful first series for the Dennis Williams era in Bowling Green, as BGSU hockey took two games against Mercyhurst, capped off with a 5-4 overtime and comeback win on Saturday.
The Orange and Brown are off to their best start since the 2020-21 season, when the Falcons started 2-0 against Adrian College.
After taking a 3-1 lead through two periods, Mercyhurst surrendered two goals to BGSU, traded the next goals to maintain a tie game and then lost in the three-on-three overtime to junior forward Brett Pfoh and the Falcons.
It was a forward-scoring frenzy for the Falcons, with all five goals coming from wingers or centers.
Pfoh led BG’s offense with two bookend goals, the leadoff score for either team and the overtime winner.
Captain centers Ethan Scardina and Ville Immonen commanded goals while also dominating the faceoff circles with 30 combined faceoff wins of the 54 total wins for the Falcons.
Immonen tacked on his first two points as a Falcon, first assisting on the first Pfoh goal before scoring his own.
Sophomore goaltender Cole Moore reached the 30-save mark in his escapade but allowed four goals to Mercyhurst for a .882 save percentage.
Opposing goaltender Carter McPhail recorded 37 saves but allowed five goals for a .881 save percentage.
Similarly to the first game of the weekend, BG dominated the shot chart, recording 85 shots and 42 shots on goal. They held the Lakers to 57 total shots and only 34 shots on goal, making McPhail work much harder than Moore and inevitably landing the deciding shot and score.
Williams and the Falcons return home for two exhibition games in a Thursday and Saturday series against Robert Morris and Simon Fraser on Oct. 10 and 13, respectively.
