If you build it, they will come, and that is certainly what has happened with BGSU volleyball, putting the Mid-American Conference (MAC) on notice following two reverse sweeps against Toledo and Western Michigan. Three standout players propelled both those comebacks. Senior outside hitter Mia Tyler helped kick the offense into gear this week on the back of a dynamic 51 total kills since Tuesday, with 17 coming against Toledo, 19 on Friday against Western Michigan in the comeback and 15 on Saturday against WMU.
Tyler was named MAC volleyball’s Offensive Player of the Week following these performances, with a .271 average hitting percentage and a high percentage of .312 on Saturday. The award is Tyler’s second of her career and her first in nearly two years.
The offensive game was propelled by sophomore setter Amanda Otten, who was lights out this past week. Against Toledo, she recorded a career-high 53 assists, helping the Falcons to pull off the reverse sweep at Savage Arena.
Otten is now a two-time MAC Setter of the Week with a stat line of 134 assists, 16 kills and 13 total blocks, demonstrating that she can do it all for the Orange and Brown.
Defense completed the sweep of weekly awards for the Falcons as fifth-year middle blocker Alexis Mettille was crowned MAC Defensive Player of the Week as she led her unit to 152.0 total blocks, averaging 2.58 per set, the second-best mark in the MAC.
Mettille continues the theme of being an all-around player for BGSU, sitting with a .407 hitting percentage, good enough for second in the MAC.
Defensively, Mettille was a brick wall this past week, accumulating 19.0 total blocks through three games with a season-high eight blocks against Western Michigan on Saturday. The award will serve as Mettille’s first MAC weekly award of her career.
“Three great teammates who make everyone around them better and who care more about the TEAM than their individual awards,” Bowling Green head coach Danijela Tomic said on her X account.
The Falcons are firing on all cylinders as they will continue MAC play this week at the Stroh Center against Eastern Michigan on Thursday and Central Michigan on Friday.
