While in a game that doesn’t matter for record, the Falcons played like it was for the CCHA championship, besting Robert Morris 7-2. Their five-goal third period vaulted BG far ahead of the Colonials, leading to a dominating win in 60 minutes.
Possession of BG was a huge positive. In their third contest of the season, they were able to hold onto the puck nearly the entirety of the third period, surrendering some time in the first and second while still coming away with a goal lead, 2-1.
“I didn’t like our first two periods,” said head coach Dennis Williams. “I thought we were on the perimeter and not hard enough inside the dots, but we started generating more offense zone time in the third and we got rewarded.”
The Falcons did get rewarded in the third period, finding 5 goals, three of which came in two minutes. Junior Dalton Norris and sophomore Adam Schankula found the first two goals of the three-in-a-row while senior Ryan O’Hara scored the next two, bringing his season point total to four.
Sophomore Nick O’Hanisain would then finish scoring with his slap and propel BG to a sizable win over Robert Morris in the first home match of the season.
“We have to just do what we do,” said Williams. “We have to compete like we did in the third going forward and we just have to find consistency at the end of the day.”
Unfortunately, the strong effort came at no boost to BG’s win column, nor goals for or against. Williams remarked that he wants to play hard hockey no matter what the outcome will be.
“Exhibitions is such a bad word,” said Williams. “There’s no exhibition games … we still have to play the game to win.”
The Falcons will face off in another exhibition match against Simon Fraser on Sunday at 5 p.m. in the Slater Family Ice Arena before heading on the road for non-conference games against Western Michigan and RIT the following week.
