BGSU volleyball (13-8,8-2) defeated the Kent State Golden Flashes (1-19, 0-10) in three straight sets.
With the win tonight being a sweep, it makes three straight games where the Falcons have won in three sets.
“This was a tough, challenging match. We knew that Kent State’s record does not reflect how good they can play.” Coach Danijela Tomic said in the post-game press conference. “We need them to be the best version of ourselves, that’s what competition is.”
Here’s how the game went:
Set 1
The Orange and Brown got off to a slow start. Trading points with neither team taking a lead or more than two points.
BGSU gets a run started with sophomore setter Amanda Otten dropping the ball off for a setter score, making the score 18-17.
Otten’s score was followed up by a spike from senior outside hitter Mia Tyler and a mistake by Kent State to open the lead up to 20-17 and ended with BG taking the first set 25-23.
Set 2
The Falcons looked much more comfortable in the second set as they came out and dominated in this set.
Opening the scoring was Otten, who started the team off strong with a service ace.
After some back-and-forth plays, Kent State took a three-point lead, but freshman outside hitter Edyta Waclawczyk subbed into the game and rallied the troops with a spike and made the score 6-8.
The Waclawczyk spike got the Falcons rolling and helped them to go on a six-point run. With kills from junior opposite hitter Lauryn Hovey, Tyler and Otten were getting back in on the scoring action.
This run would help to close the door on set two as BGSU took it with a final score of 25-16.
Set 3
Hovey would open the scoring for both teams with a spike.
With plenty of back and forth throughout this set, it was Kent State who was able to reach the 20-point mark first.
With the score at 19-22 for Kent State, it would be a service ace from fifth-year middle blocker Alexis Mettille, a kill by junior middle blocker Jessica Andrews, three kills by Hovey, and the game-winning service ace to finish the game off.
Otten ended the game with 31 assists and was even able to add three kills.
Hovey was the lone Falcon with double-digit kills with 14.
As a team, the Falcons ended with eight service aces.
The Falcons are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 5 p.m. for the second match against Kent State for the final time in the regular season.
