BGSU hockey (3-2) traveled to Columbus on Friday night to face in-state rival Ohio State Buckeyes at the Schottenstein Center.
The two teams, as evidenced by the multiple massive body checks and constant post-whistle-shoving matches teams, showed much dislike for each other throughout the game.
The Buckeyes struck first with an even-strength goal from senior defenseman Brent Johnson, followed by a power-play tally from graduate student defenseman Aiden Hansen-Bukata.
Much of the first period was controlled by OSU as they were able to challenge sophomore goaltender Cole Moore 10 times, while the Falcons were only able to respond with three shots of their own.
The second period featured much of the same gameplay with no change on the scoreboard. The Falcons were able to create some momentum and begin to create quality scoring chances at the end of the period with help from a late power-play opportunity due to a Nathan McBrayer interference penalty.
This power play and momentum carried over into the third period, and the Falcons were seemingly able to answer with a goal of their own thanks to a rebound opportunity fired in by sophomore forward Ben Doran while still on the power play. Unfortunately, an official review deemed that BG had dislodged the net before the puck went in, resulting in the tally being disallowed.
While frustrating for the Falcon fans and players alike, the disallowed goal did not sway the momentum for the Orange and Brown.
Bowling Green responded soon after freshman forward Maxwell Martin ripped a backhand shot past Ohio State goaltender Logan Terness for his first career collegiate goal. Doran received some consolation for his disallowed goal by pitching in an assist along with graduate student Seth Fyten.
BG continued to have momentum throughout the third period, outshooting the Buckeyes 19 to eight in the final stage of play. Terness, however, stood tall and did not allow another goal for the rest of the game, and OSU tacked on another tally from junior defenseman Damien Carfagna during a four-on-four opportunity.
Coach Dennis Williams and the team will look for a different result tonight as they return home to the Slater Family Ice Arena to finish their home-home series with the Buckeyes at 7:37 p.m.
Falcon Media Sports Network’s Ben Corak and Sam Morris will have the call on WBGU 88.1 FM.
