BGSU men’s basketball dropped their second straight game to open the young season, losing in their home opener to Davidson on Friday night, 91-85.
Here’s how it went down:
First Half
Davidson opened the first half with a 7-4 run, with five points scored by sophomore forward Bobby Durkin.
BGSU senior guard Trey Thomas and senior forward Marcus Johnson were the lone BG scorers before the first media timeout.
After the first media timeout, Davidson’s lead extended to a double-digit lead, 19-6, forcing head coach Todd Simon to use his first timeout.
Bowling Green opened the timeout with a layup via senior forward Sam Towns, snapping their nearly three-minute scoreless streak and cutting the lead to 11.
After another two-minute scoreless streak, sophomore forward Wilguens Jr. Exacte got the Orange and Brown back on the board with a triple, moving the score to 28-16. The Falcons would then respond with another three-pointer from senior guard Dajion Humphrey.
Late in the first half, junior guard Javontae Campbell drove to the basket and converted a layup while falling to the floor, cutting Davidson’s lead to 41-23.
With less than 10 seconds remaining in the half, senior guard Derrick Butler went 1-2 from the free throw line to send the Falcons into halftime down 16, 47-31.
At half, Johnson and Campbell were the leading scorers for the Orange and Brown, with eight points each.
Durkin led the Wildcats in scoring with 16, including a 4-5 mark from beyond the arc, after the first 20 minutes of action.
Second Half
Johnson hit a corner three to open the second half for the Falcons, getting the lead down to 13.
Then, the Orange and Browns stole the ball from the Wildcats, with Thomas driving to the rim to shrink the deficit to 11.
Feeding the hot hand, Thomas once again found Johnson in the corner for another three. Junior forward Youssef Khayat hit another three-pointer from the left corner, forcing a Davidson timeout and extending a BG 11-2 scoring run.
Johnson couldn’t be stopped from three, showcasing his unlimited range once more, hitting another triple from the top of the key to shrink the Davidson lead to seven, 54-47.
With 13:30 remaining in the half, Towns recorded two blocks in a row during a single Davidson possession, sending the ball flying into the packed student section both times.
Another driving layup by Campbell got the Falcons within a five-point deficit. Fouled on the next play, Campbell headed to the line, going 1-2 to cut down the Davidson lead to four.
With time ticking down in the game, Cambell converted two free throws and forced a turnover for another two points, BG down by four, 82-78.
Despite scoring 54 points in the second half, the Falcons could not gain the lead and lost to the Wildcats by a final score of 91-85.
Bowling Green never held a single lead once the entire game.
Orange and Brown’s record now stands at 0-2 in the season, while Davidson’s improved to 2-0.
Campbell finished with 30 points and four steals on the night, while Johnson added 19 points.
After a 0-2 start to the season, Simon is not worried about the challenging schedule ahead.
“It’s gonna be a process, but we’re challenging ourselves with a more difficult schedule this year and two very difficult opening games this week,” Simon said. “But it’s with the eyes on a bigger prize and being better from these games.”
Bowling Green’s next matchup will be on Monday, Nov. 11, when they will battle Taylor at the Stroh Center.
