BGSU women’s basketball (2-3) fell to the No. 13 West Virginia Mountaineers (5-0) 78-47, Tuesday night at the WVU Coliseum
The action started slow for both the Falcons and the Mountaineers. Fifth-year forward Erika Porter and junior guard Jordan Harrison got the offense started for both teams, scoring eight of the first 12 points of the game.
It was the battle of the guards in the first quarter. Both sophomore guard Paige Kohler and junior guard Sydney Shaw went back and forth in the first, each scoring a pair of buckets for their teams.
West Virginia came out of the second quarter hot, continuing a mountaineer 11-0 run that started in the first quarter. Junior forward Célia Rivière and senior guard JJ Quinerly led the way for West Virginia, each getting five points in the second quarter.
The first half ended with a Mountaineer lead of 37-19. West Virginia ran away with the half during the second quarter.
West Virginia’s defense forced 14 turnovers in the first half while scoring 22 points off of those turnovers. The Mountaineers were smothering the Falcons all first half, including a full-court press that only allowed four second-quarter points for Bowling Green.
The second half started with a game-changing play. West Virginia’s Shaw committed a flagrant two-foul and was ejected from the game.
Bowling Green and senior guard Amy Velasco wasted no time taking advantage of Shaw’s ejection. Velasco scored eight immediate points since the ejection, hoping to spark a second-half run for the Orange and Brown.
The third quarter ended 55-35 for the Mountaineers. Even though BG trailed by a lot, a bright spot was Velasco’s scoring, as she had 11 third-quarter points.
The Mountaineers defeated the Falcons with a final score of 78-47. West Virginia showcased their dominant defense, which contributed heavily to the large win.
The Falcon’s next matchup is on Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. as they travel down to Columbus to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes. Falcon Media Sports Network’s Lucas Kleimeyer and Kaden Knapp will have the call on WBGU 88.1 F.M.
