A new club at BGSU creates a space for students with an interest in all things true crime and have a natural curiosity for the unknown.
The True Crime and Conspiracies club, formed by criminal justice majors Abby Moore, Riley Skaris and Cadence Hacker, brings together students at BGSU with a passion for all things true crime and want to share a space with those who have the same interest.
“We all really like listening to true crime podcasts and talking about it, and we realized that we never really have anybody aside from the three of us to talk with them about it. And we were like, I’m sure there’s a lot of people on campus who are interested in it, especially people who aren’t even criminal justice majors,” Moore said.
While BGSU has clubs geared towards criminal justice majors specifically, the True Crime and Conspiracies club is targeted to any student with an interest in true crime.
“We wanted to have a club that was not academic related, because there is the Criminal Justice Student Association. But, we wanted people who aren’t criminal justice majors to also have that opportunity,” Moore said. “It’s for anybody to come together that has that passion for true crime and talking about it, and just finding others that also share that passion.”
The club’s first meeting on Nov. 13 had a diverse group of students with different majors, which was one of their main goals.
“At our last meeting, we had one criminal justice major show up besides the three of us, and then we had creative writing, we had one biology, forensic science and psychology. So, it’s definitely getting more open,” Moore said. “I think it’s cool to see how other people still have majors in different fields, but still can tie it to criminal justice.”
Moore said as of right now, they are in the process of brainstorming creative events for the club’s future meetings.
“Our meetings are just kind of event based. It’s nothing where we are just going to talk to you the entire meeting,” she said.
The events will provide students with different ways to talk about cases they find most interesting and share their theories with others.
“We are hoping to do true crime presentation nights where you present your most intriguing or favorite criminal case to talk about,” Moore said. “Also, a podcast or book club once a month where we all listen to a podcast or read a book, and then come together and talk about it, and have documentary nights with study tables and watching true crime documentaries.”
While it’s not an academic club, there may be some meetings with professional development, which can benefit all majors.
“We are hoping to keep it more free and open to everybody. There might be nights where we do resume workshops and everything like that so there is still an academic tie,” Moore stated.
Moore, along with Skaris and Hacker, said the club was formed solely with the purpose of discussing specific true crime cases and theories.
“When we had our first meeting with student engagement, we had to clarify with them that we are not going out there and actually solving crime, and we aren’t saying we love crime,” Moore said.
Moore discussed future plans for the club and what they are hoping to achieve with the planning of events.
“We are hoping in the future to have more of an exec board, so that we can get things more organized and have events lined up, so that next semester we can have more biweekly meetings with events planned,” she said. “Our club is set up so that you don’t have to be at every meeting, if you come to one meeting great, if you come to all of them, also great.”
The club has an Instagram account (@bgtcc_bgsu), and they hope to build it up in order to spread the word about their events.
“We’re hoping to be a little more active whether we do crime cases of the week or anything just to post more, so that people are seeing it, reposting it and getting the word out,” Moore said.
Moore hopes that over time, the club will continue to grow as more people across BGSU’s campus hear about them.
“We’re just hoping that we can find more people on campus that are also interested in true crime and can find that space where they can come and connect with those people,” she said.
