BGSU women’s basketball (3-4) dashed past the Stetson Hatters (3-3) by a score of 79-43 this afternoon. It marked the first time the two collided.
The first quarter was a highly contested back-and-forth quarter. Both teams came out of the gate very fast-paced, and the game’s first points 19 seconds into the contest thanks to freshman guard Lauren Gerken.
After allowing two consecutive Stetson threes the Falcons proceed to go on a 7-0 run, making it 9-6.
Graduate student forward Tiasia McMillan broke the Stetson drought by knocking down a mid-range jumper. The Orange and Brown then proceeded to score six consecutive points to build a 14-10 lead.
The quarter ended with a sophomore Noga Haran basket, making it 18-14 BGSU after one.
Quarter number two was a great quarter for the Falcons. They started off the segment by scoring six of the first eight points between the two squads.
Already up by seven, Lauren Gerken then buried two consecutive threes to stretch the lead to 13. Moments later, senior guard Amy Velasco knocked down a three and sparked a 7-0 Falcon stretch to make it 40-22.
To conclude the quarter, BGSU went on yet another 7-0 run. This time, the run made it 47-25 heading into the locker room. BG outscored SU 29-11 in the second.
Out of the break, Velasco added three more to the Falcons total before graduate forward Erkia Porter knocked down a jumper while being fouled.
To make matters worse for the Hatters, Velasco hit yet another shot, and Porter made another shot while being fouled to follow. This put the tally at 55-28.
By the end of the third quarter, the Falcons had built a 62-37 lead in front of a Falcon fan-filled Ocean Center.
With the game out of hand, coach Chmiel dug deeper into his rotation. The quarter did not see a lot of scoring after the first few minutes.
At one point late in the game, both teams went nearly three minutes without a score; however, BGSU still was able to score over 70 points at 79 before time expired.
Erika Porter earned the Falcon Media Food and Drink Guide Player of the Game, scoring 20 points and hauling in eight rebounds. She also played for a total of almost 22 minutes.
Lauren Gerken made her first big splash as a Falcon, hitting four of the five threes she attempted, scoring 20 points, and bringing in seven boards.
Finally, for BG, Velasco surpassed Andrea Nordmann for 24th all-time leading scorer in Bowling Green women’s basketball history. With her 16 points today, she is now 36 points away from obtaining the 23rd spot on that board.
Stetson’s leading scorer was graduate student forward Quentarra Mitchell, with 10 points. As a team, the Hatters shot 18/65 from the floor and 3/23 from beyond the arc.
The Falcons take the floor tomorrow, Nov. 30, at 1:15 as they duel Arkansas. It’ll be the second and final game for BGSU in Daytona, Florida.
