On Friday afternoon, Bowling Green men’s basketball (2-5) fell to Weber State 73-70 for their second loss in a row and their fourth loss on the road.
Here’s how it went down:
First half
Bowling Green got their scoring night started with a quick three by senior forward Marcus Johnson, tying the game at 3-3 in the first half. 30 seconds later, senior guard Derrick Butler hit another three- getting BG up to a 6-3 lead early in the first.
Later on, Weber State extended their lead with a dunk via senior center Vasilije Vucinic’s dunk- Bowling Green headed into the media timeout down 21-16. Not going away, the Orange and Brown opened with Butler going 3/3 from the free-throw line after being fouled on a three-point shot.
Both teams kept battling and battling, with Bowling Green still struggling to regain the lead they had in the opening minutes. Sophomore guard Braelon Green put the Orange and Brown on his back, scoring three straight points to send Bowling Green into the half up 43-40.
Second half
Bowling Green spent the first 7 minutes of the second half extending their lead to double digits after a Butler layup- up 54-44 vs the Wildcats. As Weber State began to close in on the Falcons lead, senior guard Trey Thomas hit a three to extend the lead to 57-53 with 11:06 remaining.
As time ticked away, Thomas hit another three-point jumper to get the Falcons to a 61-57 lead with under 10 minutes remaining in the game. After spending the entire second half trailing, Weber State finally regained the lead with a three-point shot by senior guard Miguel Tomley– putting the Wildcats up by one, 64-63.
With 2:09 remaining on the clock, Butler went 2/2 from the free throw line to tie the game 69-69. After being fouled, junior guard Javontae Campbell headed to the line but only made one free throw to make it a 70-69 lead for BG.
Weber State capitalized on the missed free throw, scoring five straight points- with two free throws by senior guard Blaise Threatt sealing the 74-70 victory for the Wildcats.
Butler led the Falcons in scoring with 16 points in the afternoon matchup. Johnson once again struggled, scoring just 8 points on 3/15 shooting.
For the Wildcats, Threatt led in scoring with 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Townley added 16 points as well.
Bowling Green will face New Mexico State in their next matchup in the Arizona Tip-off on Saturday, Nov 30, with tip-off at 4:30 p.m.
