BGSU men’s basketball returns to the Stroh Center for the first time since Nov. 19 for a matchup against Morgan State on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 2 p.m.
A win would mark the first time Bowling Green has won back-to-back games this season. It would also mark the third straight win at home for the Falcons.
The Orange and Brown are undefeated (5-0) in the month of December under head coach Todd Simon.
Matchup History
The Falcons are 2-0 against Morgan State, with Bowling Green winning the last matchup in 2022 by 10 points, 86-76.
Bowling Green won the other contest in 2016, 90-58.
Scouting Bowling Green
Bowling Green comes into the matchup with a 3-5 record on the season.
The Falcons are coming off a 61-60 win over New Mexico State in the Arizona Tip-Off on Saturday.
BGSU’s offense has been visibly better than last season. They lead the Mid-American Conference (MAC) with an 80.6% free throw percentage, the ninth-best mark in the country.
The Orange and Brown also rank second in the conference with a 38.4% three-point percentage.
They are not the strongest rebounding team, ranking eighth in the conference with 33.0 boards per game and 10th with 8.3 offensive rebounds per contest.
Bowling Green has a solid defense this season. Although they rank just seventh in the MAC in points per game allowed with 72.3, they hold opponents to 29.4% shooting on three-pointers and 7.8 steals per game, ranking third in the conference.
Scouting Morgan State
Morgan State comes to the Stroh Center with a 5-6 record; however, they have yet to win a road matchup, holding a 0-4 record in away matchups.
The Bears have caught fire as of late, scoring 123 and 124 points against Central Pennsylvania College and Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, respectively.
Morgan State’s offense has been high-powered this season. They lead the Mid-Eastern Athletics Conference (MEAC) with 84.6 points per game and a 51.6% field goal percentage.
They are also a good rebounding team, leading the MEAC by outrebounding opponents by 6.1 boards per game. They rank second in the conference with 39.3 rebounds per game and third with 11.9 rebounds per contest.
The Bears have been solid on defense, leading the MEAC with 4.1 blocks per game. They also hold opponents to 42.5% shooting from the field, ranking second in the conference.
Falcon Four Players to Watch
Javontae Campbell (Bowling Green #2)
The junior guard has been one of the most impactful additions for Simon and the Falcons.
Campbell leads Bowling Green with a 52.5% field goal percentage and ranks eighth in the MAC with 15.1 points per game.
The Muskogee, Oklahoma, native also leads the MAC and ranks ninth in the nation with 23 steals.
Marcus Johnson (Bowling Green #6)
The senior forward is the center of Bowling Green’s offense.
Johnson ranks fourth in the MAC with 17.4 points per game and sixth with 19 three-pointers.
The Akron, Ohio, native is also shooting 95.7% on free throws, leading the MAC and ranking ninth in the country.
Wynston Tabbs (Morgan State #1)
The graduate student guard is the main threat for Morgan State, ranking second in the MEAC with 17 steals and third with 17.5 points per game and a 47.7% field goal percentage.
Tabbs also shoots 97.2% from the charity stripe, leading the MEAC and ranking fourth in the country.
He scored a season-high 27 points last game against Central Pennsylvania.
Amahrie Simpkins (Morgan State #11)
Simpkins, a senior guard, has also had a good season.
He ranks second in the MEAC with 59.4% shooting from the field, sixth with seven blocks and 15 steals and 10th with 12.9 points per game.
