The Falcons (5-7-2, 2-4-2) completed their weekend series against the No. 15 Minnesota State Mavericks (12-4-2, 7-1-2) with a heartbreaking 3-2 loss in overtime. The loss marks the second time the Falcons have been swept in a weekend series, with the first coming against current No. 17 Ohio State back in October.
Ben Doran found the net first in the contest off a pass from Quinn Emerson, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead in the waning minutes of the first period. Minnesota State responded swiftly, scoring a tying goal only 18 seconds later.
Around the midway mark of the second period, the Mavericks once again found the net, putting the Falcons in a 2-1 deficit. The Falcons exited the second period without changing the scoresheet from there.
Early into the third and final frame of play, Jaden Grant capitalized on an Eric Parker pass from behind the net, again tying the game at 2 goals apiece. This score would hold for the remainder of regulation.
In the overtime period, Ryan O’Hara found no choice but to take a penalty to avoid giving up a breakaway goal. This ultimately proved to be too much for the Falcons, however, as the Mavericks were able to find the net once more during the ensuing power play, securing a 3-2 victory.
Despite the loss, goalkeeper Cole Moore still had 33 saves in the contest, posting a .917 save percentage. The Falcons also led the Mavericks in faceoffs, by a margin of 32-25. BG’s record on the season in overtime games will officially move to 4-1, marking the first overtime loss of the season.
The Falcons will be back in action next weekend when they host a home series against the Northern Michigan Wildcats, who are still seeking their first Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) win of the season. The contests will tip off at 7:07 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, and Saturday, Dec. 14.
