Despite a crushing five-set loss on Tuesday to Arizona in the NIVC Championship game, Bowling Green continues their record-breaking season as junior opposite Lauryn Hovey has been named an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American as an honorable mention.
The award marks the first time in Hovey’s career that she will be named an All-American, with this season arguably being her best.
A 2024 Mid-American Conference (MAC) First Teamer and reigning MAC Player of the Year, the Waterloo, Ontario Native, has posted 449 kills on 994 attempts, resulting in a .270 hitting percentage. She has also tallied 51 assists, 330 digs, 101.0 total blocks and 59 service aces through 133 sets.
Hovey was the engine to the 2024 Falcon’s offense as she led the team in both kills and service aces, breaking the program’s career ace record in the Rally Scoring Era.
The nomination is yet another addition to the repertoire of the Orange and Browns head coach Danijela Tomic, who has been at the helm for all three AVCA All-American awards with Hovey this year and former Falcon Petra Indrova in 2021 and 2022.
Throughout the NIVC Tournament, Hovey functioned as the primary weapon for BGSU, being named to the NIVC All-Tournament Team, mainly due to her 78 kills on 172 attempts, along with seven assists, nine service aces, 45 digs, and 19 blocks, through 22 sets and five matches.
Although it was a tough loss for the Orange and Brown in the championship match, Hovey will remain one of the key pieces for Bowling Green in 2025 as the junior still has one more year of eligibility.
