BGSU Volleyball has lost its head coach, Danijela Tomic, as after her 13th season of coaching BG, she has decided to take a job as the head coach at the University of Cincinnati in the Big 12.
Tomic was arguably the most successful head coach in program history. She leaves Bowling Green as the second-winningest coach with a 236-161 record and captured a program-best seven Mid-American Conference (MAC) championships.
“BGSU has been fortunate to have one of the best coaches in college sports for the last 13 years in Danijela Tomic,” said Director of Athletics Derek van der Merwe in a press release. “She has had a profound impact on this University community, our alumni and staff, and the student-athletes she has coached. She has redefined how to build and sustain a comprehensive winning program. She has consistently won on and off the court, making everyone part of the ‘BGVB’ volleyball story!’ I am so grateful and honored to have worked and learned from her during my tenure. I wish her the best in this next opportunity.”
Since 2012, Tomic has coached five MAC Player of the Year award winners (Kendall Seimet and Petra Indrova twice, Lauryn Hovey). She was also a three-time MAC Coach of the Year.
Most recently, Tomic has had her most successful season, going 16-2 in the MAC and winning the MAC regular season, entering the National Invitational Volleyball Championship, and getting to the final match, a five-set loss against Arizona. As well as Hovey’s Player of the Year selection, she coached Amanda Otten and Alexis Mettille to All-MAC First Team and Jessica Andrews and Mia Tyler to All-MAC Second Team.
“I am forever grateful to Bowling Green State University, the Bowling Green community, and especially my incredible former student-athletes for their trust, dedication and belief in me and our shared vision,” said Tomic in a statement. “The memories and success we built together over 13 years will always hold a special place in my heart.”
Cincinnati’s new hire will come after the terminated previous head coach, Molly Alvey, on Dec. 13. That came on the heels of a 14-15 overall record, a 5-13 conference record in the Big 12, and a steady decline for the Bearcats from the start of the season to the finish, including a 1-6 final seven games taking them out of playoff contention.
