Bowling Green men’s basketball began their Mid-American Conference (MAC) schedule and the new year of 2025 this past Friday, falling to Akron 71-68 after giving up the lead in the last 1:10 stretch of the game after holding the lead for the entire night.
The Falcons began their conference schedule with a loss after recording a 87-62 victory over Aquinas just 11 days earlier. Bowling Green has constantly had a hot and cold start to their season with a 5-8 record.
When referring to a hot and cold season schedule for the Falcons, Bowling Green has only recorded back-to-back victories once this season, defeating New Mexico St and Morgan State on Nov. 30 and Dec. 7.
The Falcons began their season 0-2 with losses against Southern Miss and Davidson, back to back losses vs Bellarmine and Weber State. Most recently, they suffered back-to-back losses against Kansas City and St Thomas.
The biggest struggle this season for the Falcons, the away record. The Falcons hae an 0-4 record on away games this season, while having a 5-4 record at home.
Every other season victory, three to be exact, for the Falcons has been followed by a loss or two straight losses. In the past four games, Bowling Green has a 1-3 record.
Part of the reason for the record is of course a common conversation in the past few weeks, the lack of depth. Both Youseff Khayat and Sam Towns are currently still out with injury, and DaJion Humphrey has still not played since Nov. 19 vs Niagara.
“Hopefully, we got the calvary coming at some point here with some of the other guys, and that’ll really help give us some depth and some length. It’s been tricky because the injuries have been at kind of the similar positions, so we’re kind of playing guys out of their natural position,” head coach Todd Simon said. “We look forward to kind of getting guys back in their natural roles. But they’re doing what’s asked, and they’re stepping up and just try to find a way.”
The Falcons finally had some luck in their injury-plagued season, Braelon Green, who exited the St. Thomas game with an injury returned to action vs the Zips,
In order to get back on track in the season, the Falcons must be able to finally build momentum and push forward, with a 5-8 record on the season so far- Bowling Green currently ranks in the bottom four of the MAC.
Bowling Green’s next game in the MAC comes against Western Michigan on Jan. 7, with tip off at 7:00 p.m.
