BGSU women’s basketball (7-7, 1-2) fell short in a Wednesday night matchup against the Buffalo Bulls (13-1, 2-1). Bowling Green led the game for 32:11 only to relinquish the lead in the fourth and never regain it.
Although the Falcons jumped out to a hot start leading 18-6 within the first five minutes of the game the Bulls fought their way back into the game.
Entering the fourth quarter Bowling Green had a five-point lead, 50-45, but the Buffalo went on a 12-2 point run to take the lead 57-52, and they would not look back from that point as the Buffalo Bulls would finish the game with 70 points.
A big part of the loss was a fourth-quarter scoring drought that saw the Falcons only score 10 points in the quarter. Going 3-17 from the field and 1-9 from behind the arc.
The fourth-quarter problems did not end there for the Falcons as the Bulls were able to take and make 9-11 shot attempts from the field and go 7-8 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.
“I have to do a better job transferring our execution from practice to games,” Coach Fred Chmiel said. “I thought we had a pretty good plan going forward from practice and shoot around today but just didn’t execute.”
Although the Falcons struggled to put up points in the fourth quarter, they were able to follow their misses and coral seven offensive rebounds to keep the pressure on the Bulls throughout the quarter.
A big thing that the Bulls were able to do was to get out and run against the Falcon’s defense as they were able to put up six points on fast break baskets alone in the fourth quarter of the game.
Not only were the Buffalo Bulls able to get out and run in the fourth quarter, but they were able to do a majority of their work in the paint as they put up 14 points in the paint compared to the Falcon’s four points in the paint.
For Bowling Green, this marks their fifth straight loss to the Buffalo Bulls, with their last win coming in the 2022-23 season.
Coach Chmiel knows that this team has what it takes to take the next step and will help push them forward to the next game. “It starts with me, I have no misconceptions, it starts with me. I will turn this inward, and we will move onto Miami.”
The Falcons now fall to 1-2 in Mid-American Conference Play and look to bounce back on Saturday, Jan. 11 as they travel to Oxford to face the Miami Redhawks.
