BGSU hockey’s star defenseman Gustav Stjernberg received the Defenseman of the Week award in the first full week of CCHA competition in 2025. This is the fourth defenseman and sixth total weekly award given to a Falcon this season.
The sophomore blue liner out of Enebyberg, Sweden scored a goal and two assists on Friday Jan. 10 and another assist against Bemidji State on the Saturday game. His +4 rating on the weekend was the highest of any player in the CCHA.
Stjernberg is up to three goals and six assists on the season in 15 of 21 games for Bowling Green. He missed the entirety of the St. Thomas, Michigan Tech and Lake Superior State series due to nagging injuries, yet still is the team’s second highest scoring defenseman (Dalton Norris, 2/8/10).
Falcon backmen have been outstanding this season with Stjernberg joining Breck McKinley (11/18/24) and Dalton Norris who (Nov. 4, Dec. 2) have also won Defenseman of the Week honors. Collectively, defensemen in Orange and Brown have scored six goals and 29 assists through 21 games, almost a third of BG’s total points and assists this season.
This is Stjernberg’s first weekly award from the CCHA in his two seasons as he will try and earn another in Bowling Green’s next series against Ferris State on Jan. 17 and 18 at 7:07 in Big Rapids, Mich.
