On a night when it was as close to a must-win as possible for BGSU women’s basketball (8-8, 2-3 MAC), sophomore guard Paige Kohler stepped up and showed out for the Falcons in their 74-53 win over Ohio.
The Olmsted Falls, Ohio, native, posted 18 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists. Just two rebounds and assists shy of a triple-double.
But as much as it was a stand-out performance from Kohler, she knows how important this win can be for the Falcons in the long run. Considering Bowling Green hasn’t found a lot of wins away from home this season.
“This season, we haven’t won on the road, and we came out here, and we really wanted to win this one, said Kohler postgame on WBGU 88.1 FM. “We just lost two back-to-back, and we just jumped out to a great start. But, I mean, you can see across the stats it wasn’t just one person, it was all of us, so it was great to get that type of team win.”
That type of maturity from a sophomore is rare, but with the role Kohler has had in her first two seasons with the Falcons, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone.
So far in her BG career, Kohler has started all 47 collegiate games for head coach Fred Chmiel. This season, she is one of three players to have started every game for Orange and Brown, averaging 12.4 points per game (PPG), and leads the team in total rebounds with 77, 70 of which are defensive.
Looking ahead, the Falcons host Northern Illinois (7-9, 1-4 MAC) at the Stroh Center on Saturday, an opportunity for BG to string together back-to-back conference wins for the first time this year.
Kohler understands how important it is for the Falcons to build off this result and keep their foot on the gas against the Huskies.
“We just need to keep pushing the ball, we have to do things with a purpose, set screens with a purpose,” said Kohler. “Keep taking open shots. I think we did that today, we were able to knock them down. But I think the big one is just keep running the floor.”
As the Falcons look to pick up another big win this weekend, Kohler will also strive to continue performing at a high level, especially as we enter the thick of MAC play.
But that winning feeling? Ain’t nothing better. This win on a scale of one to 10?
“100. Perfect. Any win is awesome.”
