BGSU women’s basketball managed to get in the win column during road matchups for the first time all season. The Falcons snapped a two-game losing streak, winning against the Ohio Bobcats (3-12, 3- 74-53 to advance to 2-3 in the Mid-American Conference (MAC).
Bowling Green did not waste any time setting the tone. A three-point shot from fifth-year guard Lexi Fleming put the Orange and Brown in the lead 3-0, which kept BGSU in the lead for the entire contest.
Fleming finished the day with 19 points, leading BGSU in scoring. Just one point shy of 1,000 career collegiate points.
Three other Falcons also managed to get into double digits, with sophomore guard Paige Kohler finishing one point shy of Fleming with 18 points. Senior guard Amy Velasco tallied 14 points as well, and freshman guard Johnea Donahue recorded 10 points and eight rebounds.
Offensively the Orange and Brown shot 26-53 from the field, going 12-29 from three-point range. At the charity stripe, Bowling Green also dominated as they went 10-12 as Ohio got more shots but missed more frequently, going 13-19 from the stripe.
One big turning point that favored the Falcons was in the rebound category. BGSU out-rebounded the Bobcats 40-22, helping them establish a baseline momentum that carried for the entire contest.
Fifth-year forward Erika Porter led the way defensively, recording both of BGSU’s two blocks, while Donahue tallied three of the Orange and Browns’ six steals.
The win marks the first time since Dec. 7 that Bowling Green had held an opponent to under sixty points, which happened against Xavier University.
Bowling Green will also look to carry its road momentum with it, as it has seven remaining road matchups on its schedule. The Falcons are also scheduled for a rematch against the Ohio Bobcats on Feb. 26 at the Stroh Center.
The Falcons will return home on Saturday, Jan. 18 to face off against the Northern Illinois Huskies with tipoff at 7 p.m. at the Stroh Center.
